The Area

The historical area of Gascony in southwest France has innumerable attractions, with its rolling hills, broad valleys and bastide towns. The wines and cuisine are, of course, internationally famous. Fine Armagnac, pâté de fois gras and buzet wines are all produced locally, along with the best Bordeaux wines a little further afield.

Local Area

Chateau Hordosse is situated 5 kilometres from the pretty market town of Nerac, where Henri IV of France held court. The Chateau of Henri IV is situated in the centre of Nerac.

Nerac is situated on the river Baise where there are many bars and restaurants situated over looking the river with its passing traffic of motor cruisers and canoes. One can take a boat ride from the quay in order to get a riverside perspective of the area or walk in the park of the Garenne with its leafy paths and picturesque fountains, stopping, perhaps at the little cafe for a long cool drink on a sunny evening.

Nerac is famous for its Saturday morning market with its abundance of local produce. Nerac also houses all the usual amenities such as supermarkets, banks and pharmacies.

Evening markets are hosted in many of the local towns and villages. These events are occasions where local producers gather together and cook /prepare their produce to be eaten under the stars, normally accompanied by a live band – lively, friendly occasions enjoyed by all ages.

An alternative way of viewing the local area is to take the Tourist Train from Nerac to Mezin where you will observe much of the local flora and fauna and pass slowly by some beautiful historic buildings.
